Lumai is seeking an Optical Engineer to join our Oxford-based team.

As an Optical Engineer, you will contribute to the development of our optical computing product, focusing on designing, building, and testing free-space optical systems to achieve high compute performance. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with a dynamic team and gain hands-on experience in advancing optical technologies.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Optical design and modelling of systems.
• System architecture development and performance testing.
• Prototype building and contribute to system integration (must be willing to work in a laser lab environment).
• Work closely with suppliers and manufacturers on optical components.
• Collaborate with team members to develop and optimize the complete optical computing system.

REQUIREMENTS

• A degree in optical engineering, physics, or a related field.
• 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Experience with Zemax or similar ray-tracing software.
• Hands-on experience with free-space optical systems, including alignment and testing.
• Familiarity with optical devices such as LC-SLMs and DMDs.
• Programming skills in Python and/or Matlab.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with optical system prototyping and new product development.
• Exposure to AR/VR systems, projectors, or optical switches is a big plus.
• Familiarity with patents, publications, or innovative research contributions.
